The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Oko Vanderpuye has been honoured for his “hardwork, dedication to duty and commitment to the cause of humanity” by the Greater Accra Regional Nurses and Midwives Association at a brief ceremony in Accra.
The nurses and midwives were full of praise for the legislator for his “relentless efforts and support” towards their activities.
Chairperson of the Association, Margaret Ohenewa Yeboah on behalf of her colleagues. eulogized the politician: “He is our father and everything to us. Anytime, we have our nurses’ celebrations and projects, he never disappoints; always eager to help”.
In his response, Dr. Vanderpuye expressed his appreciation to the association.
Though he recognised the many challenges nurses face on the job, he urged them not to give up in their quest to save lives and provide quality health care to make the health system functional.
The former Mayor of Accra recounted how he collaborated with others to “train special women and men, who wanted to, on how to assist midwives deliver babies in Accra”.
This, he explained, came on the back of two instances where he had to assist his mother and sister to deliver under very pressing circumstances.
“I will do whatever it takes to support you in all your programmes. In your fundraising and in your projects, to advance your cause, to the best of my ability, for you to be able to deliver your special services to Ghana,” he said.
The citation presented to him chronicled some of his achievements with respect to the association’s activities, his professional life as well as his political duties as a former Mayor and current Member of Parliament.
