President Akufo-Addo has asked officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) not to allow public scrutiny to stop them from executing their mandate.
He believes that criticisms are a necessary part of the Ghanaian democracy and should not stop the receiver from carrying out their duties.
He rather urged that they pay attention to the Ghanaian voters and ensure no one is disenfranchised in the course of their work.
The President made these remarks at a short ceremony to swear-in three new EC members at the Jubilee House on Monday, March 20.
“Remember that now and ever, every single decision you take will be scrutinized to the letter. That, however, should not scare you and let no one try to coerce you into submission.
On the contrary, let this expectation of the Ghanaian people spur you onto great heights and above all, work to ensure that, the will of the Ghanaian people is upheld.”
President Akufo-Addo added that “It is no secret that I have spent most of my adult life trying to fight for the establishment of democracy and human rights in this country and I have always fought and advocated for credible elections in Ghana.”
In his view, elections are about those who cast their vote, not those who count, not those who supervise the process, nor those who transmit or declare the results.
“The heart of the democratic process is giving effect to the choices made by those who cast the votes,” he emphasised.
The newly sworn-in members are Dr Peter Appiahene, Madam Salima Ahmed Tijani and Reverend Akua Ofori Boateng.
