President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Mr. Benjamin Quashie as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa.
The appointment, which follows consultation with the Council of State, is part of a broader diplomatic reshuffle involving 15 individuals nominated as Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and Consul-General designates to represent Ghana across various missions worldwide.
This was contained in an official communication from the Office of the President dated June 10, 2025.
Mr. Quashie, who currently serves as the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in South Africa, has long been a prominent voice in the Ghanaian diaspora community and a staunch advocate for the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.
His nomination is being hailed by many within the Ghanaian community in South Africa as both timely and well-deserved.
In a recent interview on Ghasa Radio, Mr. Quashie reaffirmed his commitment to championing the interests of Ghanaians in South Africa, calling for continued law-abiding behavior among the diaspora while assuring that the incoming High Commissioner would prioritize unity, protection, and effective service delivery for the Ghanaian population in South Africa.
“Whoever comes as the High Commissioner will have to work for the benefit of the Ghanaian people. That person will have to bring pragmatic changes and ensure that the Ghanaian community feels safe, loved, and assisted,” he said during the interview — sentiments that now take on deeper significance in light of his nomination.

Mr. Quashie also highlighted the underrepresentation of Ghanaian professionals in the Eastern Cape and other areas, calling for proactive outreach and better communication from the High Commission.
His commitment to ensuring responsiveness and community engagement at the diplomatic mission aligns with ongoing calls from Ghanaians abroad for more accessible and service-oriented representation.
The official letter, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take the necessary steps to facilitate the appointment process.
Mr. Quashie’s name appears first on the list of 15 nominees, reflecting the priority given to Ghana’s strategic diplomatic relations with South Africa.
Other notable nominees include Kojo Bonsu to the People’s Republic of China, Kulsoume S. Baffoe to the Kingdom of Spain, and Prof. Kwesi Obiri-Danso to India.
The Ghanaian community in South Africa has already begun reacting positively to the news, expressing optimism that Mr. Quashie’s extensive experience and grassroots engagement will bring renewed energy and impact to the High Commission in Pretoria.
