A staunch supporter of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid and the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency, Lawyer Christopher Arthur, has been suspended from the party with immediate effect.
The suspension, formally communicated in a letter dated July 14, 2025, was signed by Anthony Kwame Kum, Constituency Secretary and Chief Administrator, and Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, Constituency Chairman.
The decision was taken following what the party describes as a clear violation of internal directives aimed at maintaining discipline and order ahead of the party’s official nomination processes.
“Accordingly, based on instructions from the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Gibrine Tanko, and in line with Article 3(5)(A) and 3(7) of the Party’s Constitution, you are hereby suspended from the party with immediate effect, pending a final determination by the Constituency Disciplinary Committee,” the letter addressed to the 2024 parliamentary candidate read in part.
According to the letter, Mr. Arthur’s actions breached a directive issued by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on May 14, 2025. The directive strictly prohibits premature political engagements, including campaigning or soliciting support for internal positions, before official nominations are opened.
The letter emphasizes that: “…until official nominations are duly opened, no individual is permitted to engage party executives or party structures in any form of campaigning or soliciting support for internal positions.”
The party leadership expressed concern that such premature moves could derail strategic efforts to reposition the party for victory in the 2028 general elections.
“Premature engagements not only undermine the authority of the Party’s organs but also risk disrupting the careful and strategic efforts currently underway,” the letter added.
Despite these warnings, Mr. Arthur is said to have organized “an electoral area meeting” on Sunday, July 6, 2025, which the party deems a direct breach of party regulations and administrative discipline.
The letter notes that Mr. Arthur’s conduct “not only disregards the authority of the General Secretary but also undermines internal unity and the strategic work being done to strengthen the party.”
As a result, he has been suspended for the Constituency Disciplinary Committee to determine his fate.
He has been cautioned against undertaking any official duties or representing the party in any capacity during the period of his suspension.
This latest development marks a significant internal shake-up within the NPP in the Agona West Constituency, especially involving a high-profile figure with close ties to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign.
