President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte as the Acting Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA).

The appointment, effective Thursday, January 23, 2025, is part of President Mahama’s efforts to assemble a team of seasoned professionals to drive national progress.

His appointment as Director-General of SIGA marks a significant step in the President’s efforts to strengthen governance and operational efficiency within Ghana’s State-Owned Enterprises such as COCOBOD, GNPC, BOST, Ghana Gas, ECG and VRA among several others.

Prof. Kpessa-Whyte, an accomplished policy and governance expert, brings a wealth of experience to the helm of SIGA. Known for his exceptional track record in public sector governance and corporate leadership, he is tasked with overseeing and ensuring the efficient and profitable operations of Specified Entities under the authority’s purview. His appointment aligns with SIGA’s mission to oversee and administer the State’s interests in these entities, ensuring financial sustainability, good corporate governance, and shareholder value.

As an advocate of good corporate governance, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte’s expertise is expected to significantly contribute to SIGA’s vision of transforming Specified Entities into models of excellence in performance.

His leadership is anticipated to bolster adherence to corporate governance practices and enhance the socio-economic contributions of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and Joint Venture Companies.

A Legacy of Transformative Leadership

Prof. Kpessa-Whyte is celebrated for his unyielding dedication to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and his transformative approach to leadership. His tenure as Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat (NSS) left a profound impact on the institution.

Under his leadership, the NSS introduced initiatives that elevated its relevance, strengthened grassroots engagement, and inspired the youth. These achievements reinforced the NDC’s grassroots mobilization strategy, making the NSS a beacon of excellence during his time.

Beyond his administrative roles, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte’s influence extends to academia and political activism. As a lecturer at the University of Ghana, he championed the ideals of the NDC, inspiring student movements and galvanizing youth support nationwide. His efforts played a pivotal role in rallying support for the party ahead of the critical 2024 elections.

Loyalty and Resilience

Prof. Kpessa-Whyte’s unwavering loyalty to the NDC has endeared him to many within the party. He demonstrated exceptional resilience and commitment, even at great personal risk, during court battles linked to his defense of the NDC. His actions underscored his steadfast loyalty and dedication to the party’s cause, solidifying his reputation as a paragon of incorruptible leadership.

His competence, leadership, and loyalty give compelling reasons for his inclusion in the Mahama-led government. His extensive experience in public sector governance and proven record of innovation make him a fitting candidate to help deliver President Mahama’s vision for Ghana. Supporters argue that his appointment reflects the NDC’s commitment to leveraging seasoned leadership for national progress.

SIGA’s Role in Ghana’s Development

SIGA’s mission and objectives underscore its critical role in Ghana’s socio-economic development. The authority is tasked with promoting efficient and profitable operations within Specified Entities, ensuring adherence to good corporate governance practices, and overseeing the State’s interests in SOEs and Joint Venture Companies. By introducing effective measures, SIGA aims to foster socio-economic growth across agriculture, industry, and services, in line with its core mandate.

Prof. Kpessa-Whyte’s appointment is expected to bring a renewed sense of purpose and direction to SIGA. With his visionary leadership and ability to navigate complex corporate and political landscapes, he is poised to make significant contributions toward achieving SIGA’s mission and President Mahama’s legacy agenda.

His tenure at SIGA is eagerly anticipated as a new chapter in the authority’s mission to ensure excellence in performance and socio-economic growth for the nation.
